Our Pro Team are a fantastic group of talented photographers, many of whom have used 3 Legged Thing tripods and accessories for several years. Each month we introduce you to different members of the team, using short Q&As to give you some insight into how they work, what equipment they use, and how they became professional photographers.

Next in the series is Brooke Shaden, a conceptual fine art photographer with a huge social media following.

What is your earliest memory of handling a camera?

“When I was 17. It felt awkward and uncomfortable. I wasn’t very good at capturing what I was told to capture. It was for a class in school and we were told to take pictures of everyday objects – trees in the parking lot, things of that nature – and I just didn’t like it. I swore that photography was not for me, so instead I took a filmmaking class and fell in love with that method of creating art.”

Was there a single event that made you decide to become a professional photographer?

“My realization that I hated my 9-5 job. I had only been working for a few months, just out of college, but it dawned on me immediately that I worked much better for myself and under my own circumstances. I thought at first that everyone felt that way, but now I know it takes a certain type of drive to motivate yourself and sustain that lifestyle. I left my job after one year and never looked back.”

What is your favourite location to capture?

“Anything dark, whether that be forests or simply photographing against a dark sheet. I love when a subject falls into darkness in an image.”

Social media – love it or hate it?

“Love it, almost entirely. I used to vacillate about it until I understood I am not beholden to it. I have a really positive, supportive community online. I take breaks when I need to and it has never changed anything for me. I love it because I don’t make art just for myself; I make art for others to see it and hopefully feel changed by it in some way, big or small. If social media allows me to amplify that voice, I’ll love it to the moon and back.”

Favourite camera you have ever used or owned, and why?

“Sony Alpha. I came to the realization a couple of years ago that I couldn’t keep up with the heavy equipment that I had because of health concerns, so I switched to Sony for that simple reason. It was the first camera I felt I intuitively understood and enjoyed.”

What’s in your kit bag?

“Sony a7rIII, 50mm lens, 3LT Brian tripod, and a remote. I shoot very minimally.”

Name 5 essential items in your photography bag.

“Camera, lens, tripod, remote, and notebook.”

Are there any strange/unusual items in your photo bag? Household bits?

“Nude underwear, because you never know when you’ll find yourself in the middle of a field in a sheer dress. Nutritional Yeast, because everything tastes better that way. If you don’t know what nutritional yeast is, you’re welcome, because I’ve just changed your life.”

How would you describe your style of photography?

“Conceptual, fine art photography that explores the beauty in darkness.”

What is one question you’d like to be asked and never have been?

“What is your biggest shortcoming, either in business or creatively?”
